One Thing Is Needed

Luke 10:41-42 NKJV
And Jesus answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her."

Early this year, one of my disciples asked me how they can serve me better. I must admit that has been a rare question for me from a disciple. In that moment, I remembered how my discipler, Apostle Moses, had testified of how one of us had asked him the same question years ago and what his response was; “Just do your work well.” I don’t know what response my disciple was expecting, but I responded exactly the same way; “Just do your work well.” That is the one thing that is needed of every follower, disciple or employee.

When it comes to our relationship with Jesus, He spells out His one thing that is needed, namely, to receive His Word . This was what He told Martha about Mary. Jesus’ lesson to Martha was that if we start with the one thing that is needed, it unlocks the power or ease to do other things better. Martha was bitter and complaining about her sister not helping her because she (Martha) was trying to serve Jesus without first receiving the Word of Jesus. Mary on the other hand, began by receiving the Word ( Luke 10:39 ) and later, she offered Jesus a more excellent service (pouring all her expensive perfume on Jesus) without bitterness/complaining – Mark 14:3, John 11:2 .

Just before His ascension, Jesus commanded His disciples to do nothing but wait for the promise of the Holy Spirit first. That was the one thing that was needed for them at that time – Acts 1:4.

As you go through life, you have to be aware that in every circumstance, there is always a one thing that is needed above all other things; that one thing that will help you win/succeed in what you are trying to be or to do. That is the one thing that is needed, like a key that unlocks success in other things that need to be done. As a disciple of Jesus, the one thing that is needed above all, is the Word of God .

How much of the word do you have in you? Which scripture are you standing on concerning your situation?
